In the 1940s there was a long felt need for a full-fledged college in the Head Quarters of West Godavari District. This need was fulfilled when late Sri Rao Saheb Damaraju Venkata Rao, the then chairman of the Municipal Council, Eluru, took the initiative in 1944. The Municipal Council under his stewardship enlisted the sympathy and support of the philanthropic citizens in and around Eluru and embarked on a collection drive and deposited Rs.2 lakh 17 thousand in the Municipal Treasury as an earmarked fund for the starting of the college.

The building which is now Sainik School was originally named Alak Appala Kondayamba Vijayaram Palace. It was built in 1911 by Maharaja Vijayaram Gajapathi Raju as his country residence, and later bequeathed to his second son Dr. Vijayanand Gajapathi Raju, Padmabushan, (P.V.G. Raju) LLD, a Member of Parliament and a great cricket lover, known as "Vizzy" in cricketing circles, who gifted the palace, along with 206 acres (0.83 km2) of land surrounding it, for use as a school in September 1961. As a tribute to the Royal Family, the original crest and motto of the Gajapathi dynasty was adopted by the school from its inception.
